DAD 1939

Some shots of Dad in 1939. Dad and his brother John on a crisp day. I believe they are out at the farm.

Probably taken aboard the Doris, Great Aunt Hannah supervises while dad looks off at something. Great Aunt Feenie is absorbed in her purse, while John contemplates jumping into the waters.

John Hartpence plays with a car while Boo the dog looks on. John and Jim hold new balls, while Hannah and Feenie supervise.

A stagecoach or carriage from a parade, the purpose of which or where exactly I cannot ascertain. But I find two things interesting. First, Dad is just too darn cute in his black coat and cap, standing out in front and dwarfed by those around him. And one of the guys (drivers?) with their campaign hats is African American. Buffalo soldier?

HANNAH

DAD 1945

My dad was pretty photogenic. And he always seems to be wearing really nice clothes. Here are some 1945 shots, he dressed in a nice light-colored suit. I like the one of his brother Johnny, dressed more in a casual suit, mugging with dad. That was the Uncle Johnny I knew---always ready with a laugh and a mischievous grin. The last shot is with their Great Aunt Hannah.

EASTER DUDE (1940)

Just look at these outfits. Methinks today they would be like $100 or even more. Dad looks a tad solemn, but. . .

he will soon be cheered up with swag. And also looking off for more booty. Johnny isn't letting go of his basket either. That's Dad's Great Uncle John and Great Aunt Hannah.

YANKEE STADIUM

If you look carefully, standing between the mana dn woman, is my father during a 1941 visit to Yankee Stadium. Looks like they are sitting along first base line. Woman in white hat is my great Aunt Hannah, flowered hat is probably Aunt Feenie, and the little boy in front of her is my Uncle John. Don't know who the gentleman is.

MONTREAL 1938

Herewith my dad Jim and his little brother sit atop a cannon in Montreal, 1938. The man with the hat is their great uncle John Hartpence.

Obviously the other women switched out to take the pics: light grey suit is Aunt Feenie; dark dress in my grandmother, Lillian. Don't know who the other man is; it does not look like my grandfather.

THE DORIS

The "Doris" was a steamship that plied the waters of Lake Placid from 1938 to 1950, afterwhich she was replaced by the Doris II. She carried mail and passengers mostly to private landings all along the lake. Here are a couple postcards featuring the ship, followed by a couple of 1938 photos. In one my great uncle and aunt, John Armitage Hartpence and Hannah Lydia Longmore Hartpence sit on the upper deck fantail. My father is sitting on the lap of a man I can't identify to their right.

JOSEPHINE SIGLEY (AUNT FEENIE)

The more I look through old photographs of Hannah Lydia Longmore Hartpence, the more frequently I can pick out the thin bespectacled visage of a woman who has now been identified as Lydia Josephine Sigley. I wonder if she might be the eldest sister or perhaps an aunt to my grandmother Lillian. This is Aunt Feenie, as Dad referred to her (I am sure). Here she stands next to my Great Aunt Deeah.

From 26 September, 1930

Here, at age 25, Feenie is kneeling in front of a group of women, friends, I suppose. Although the inscription on back is hard to read, it appears to have been taken at the Wheelan Cottage.I am guessing on the names of the other ladies (l to r): Billie Wells, Mildred Schenkein, Maude Clyde, and Beatrice Gudmunson.

TIDD VACATION 1938

In the Summer of 1938 it appears that the Tidd family, including my father James, took a long vacation into the Adirondacks of New York and up into Montreal. They seem to have visited Lake Placid. I would not be surprised if the trip had been sponsored by John & Hannah Hartpence. Here are a series of photographs:

We start with a picture I am quite unsure about. My father holds the hand of a stylishly attired sunbather, whose identity I do not know. Neither do I know the other lady, although she may be great aunt Feeny. She is holding Dad's younger brother, John. This shot may have been made on Lake Placid.

Taken at John's Brook Bridge in Keene Valley, New York. This area was my father's favorite in the world, I think. He talked about it lovingly often. John's Brook feeds into the Ausable River.

Jim and John with their grand aunt Hannah most likely at a marina on Lake Placid. Don't you just love those old boats?

Somewhere in the Adirondacks. I can make out Jim, John, Hannah, and the possibly Feeny. I do not know who the other children and lady are. It is also possible that this picture may come from Whispering Pines in Keene Valley.

This shot appears to be at a bridge in Ausable Chasm, a beautiful gorge that has become an outdoors adventure area today, with rafting, rock climbing, and other activities. In this shot my dad stands in the forefront, flanked by his mother Lillian, and great aunt Hannah, with John along the wall. They are all dressed nicely, so I wonder if it is church they are headed to.

Not sure if this is part of the vacation, possibly right before it. Might have been taken at the Hartpence residence. Hannah (in flowered dress) with Jim and John.
