GRANDDAD 1946

A few shots of my granddad, and others, from 1946.

That's my dad walking along with his dad.

I am guessing that these two shots are on some pier on Lake Placid. The darker-headed boy is my father, and the lighter-headed boy is John.

Up in the mountains, most likely northern New York. First one has my dad on the left. I don't know who the man is in the middle. The second shot is of granddad, grandmom, and my dad.

DAD 1939

Some shots of Dad in 1939. Dad and his brother John on a crisp day. I believe they are out at the farm.

Probably taken aboard the Doris, Great Aunt Hannah supervises while dad looks off at something. Great Aunt Feenie is absorbed in her purse, while John contemplates jumping into the waters.

John Hartpence plays with a car while Boo the dog looks on. John and Jim hold new balls, while Hannah and Feenie supervise.

A stagecoach or carriage from a parade, the purpose of which or where exactly I cannot ascertain. But I find two things interesting. First, Dad is just too darn cute in his black coat and cap, standing out in front and dwarfed by those around him. And one of the guys (drivers?) with their campaign hats is African American. Buffalo soldier?

DAD 1945

My dad was pretty photogenic. And he always seems to be wearing really nice clothes. Here are some 1945 shots, he dressed in a nice light-colored suit. I like the one of his brother Johnny, dressed more in a casual suit, mugging with dad. That was the Uncle Johnny I knew---always ready with a laugh and a mischievous grin. The last shot is with their Great Aunt Hannah.

BROTHERS 1940

Herewith a few pictures of my father and his little brother, 1940. The first two are probably from the farm (I think in New Jersey), while the second pair are likely from Keene Valley.

GRANDMA AND HER BOYS

A 1941 shot of my grandmother Lillian and her boys, John and Jim. Nice smile on John, but I wonder what Dad is thinking. Still, a nice picture.

EASTER DUDE (1940)

Just look at these outfits. Methinks today they would be like $100 or even more. Dad looks a tad solemn, but. . .

he will soon be cheered up with swag. And also looking off for more booty. Johnny isn't letting go of his basket either. That's Dad's Great Uncle John and Great Aunt Hannah.

TENNIS, ANYONE?

JOHNNY (1940)

A really nice picture of my Uncle John in 1941. Grandad was an excellent tennis player and golfer. Not surprised to see shots with the boys swinging rackets.

THE DORIS (1940)

The fairly new excursion and working steamer on Lake Placid was the Doris. A sleek white ship, she started service in 1938. Here is a nice shot from 1940.

Although I might be wrong, I believe this shot to be of the covered fantail, featuring my dad and his brother.
